Three found dead

PALAKKAD: Three persons were found dead under mysterious circumstances in three separate incidents in the district. Abubecker (45) alias Kunjandi of Kalappara near Mannarkkad was found dead in a rubber estate on Sunday.

He reportedly fell from the boundary wall of the rubber estate when the police chased a group of people who were playing cards on Saturday.

In another incident at Kuzhalmannam, Chenthamara (30) of Kallukadu House, Kuthanur, was found dead. A bottle of liquor was also found near the body. A post mortem examination will be conducted on the body on Monday. In yet another incident, Raman (58) alias Kuttan Nair of Vilathala House, Kizhakkekara near Nattukal, was found dead in a house where nobody was staying. — Staff Reporter

Bank introduces no-frills account

KOCHI: Federal Bank Limited has introduced the facility of no-frills savings bank account in all its branches. The account is meant to inculcate savings habit among those who cannot afford to adhere to the norm of minimum balance. There is no stipulation of the minimum amount to open the account or the minimum balance to be maintained. Up to 50 transactions a year can be done in these accounts. — Staff Reporter

Afghan Minister arrives

Nedumbasserry: Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Abdullah Abdullah arrived at the Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery on Sunday afternoon along with his family for a private visit. He is accompanied by his mother, wife and four children. He is scheduled to return on January 13. — A Correspondent

B.Sc. Nursing allotment

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The allotment to the 20 Government seats for the B.Sc. Nursing course at the newly sanctioned Josco College of Nursing at Edapon, near Pandalam, will be held at 10 a.m. on January 12 at the Adhyapaka Bhavan here. The details regarding the allotment will be made available on the website `cee-kerala.org' on January 9. All candidates, except those belonging to the SC/ST category, should pay the fee of Rs.49,000 in cash or as a DD drawn in favour of `CEE A/c with Canara Bank' at the allotment venue itself, a press note issued from the office of the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, here said. — Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chalachithra Film Society has invited entries for the 15th Aravindan Puraskaram from Indian debut filmmakers. The films made in Indian languages/English and censored between January and December 2005 alone are eligible to participate in the competition. The award consists of a purse of Rs.10,000, a memento and a citation. Convention concludes

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Adoor Mar Thoma Convention organised by the Adoor diocese of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church at the Mar Thoma Youth Centre in Adoor came to a close on Sunday. Joseph Mar Ireneus Saffragan Metropolitan was the chief celebrant of the holy communion held on Sunday morning. Mar Ireneus inaugurated the valedictory session at 10 a.m. The Bishop Kenneth Fernando, from Sri Lanka, delivered the keynote address at the valedictory meet. No fewer than 10,000 believers from the 120 parishes under the Adoor diocese attended the five-day convention, according to Binu P. Rajan, publicity convenor.

Holiday for schools in Ernakulam today

KOCHI: The Deputy Director of Education for Ernakulam district, V. Sanu, has declared a holiday on Monday for all schools under the Department of Public Instruction in the district. In a press release on Saturday, he said this was to celebrate the district's excellent performance in the State School Athletics Meet. The district won the overall championship in the meet. — Special Correspondent

Rs. 5 crores for developing maidan

Thrissur: The State Government has received Rs. 5 crores from the Centre for developing Thekkinkad Maidan, Minister for Tourism K.C. Venugopal has said. After attending a meeting to present K.P. Narayana Pisharody Award to Akkitham, poet, here on Friday, the Minister told presspersons that the project would be completed in eight months. The award, instituted by the Cochin Devaswom Board, was received on the poet's behalf by his daughter A.E. Indira. Among those present were P.V. Krishnan Nair, Secretary, Kerala Sahitya Akademy; M. Leelavathy, critic; M.A. Krishnanunni, president of the Board, P. Ramani, secretary, and K.K. Menon and A.C. Velayudhan, members. — Staff Reporter
