A menace

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has rightly cautioned that "if this system allowing private telecom companies to tap telephones is perpetuated, it can well lead to a situation where even terrorists can misuse this system to tap our scientists, atomic research establishments, and defence installations" (Jan. 6). The Home Ministry should take this advice seriously and put an end to this tapping menace.

There is no way one can minimise the seriousness of Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh's allegation. The ease with which phone tapping is carried out is cause for concern. It not only raises the question of Mr. Singh's privileges as an MP, but also that of national security.

The editorial on the issue (Jan. 6) clearly calls for eliminating this menace. Ensuring the privacy of law-abiding citizens should be paramount.
