The Allahabad High Court verdict on reservation for Muslims in Aligarh Muslim University is indeed a landmark judgment. It is welcome that the court has corrected the move of the Centre and has said Parliament has no constitutional right to contravene court judgments.
* * *
The decision to quash reservation for Muslims in AMU is unjust. I do not understand why there should be a problem with a system that was put in place only to benefit the minority community. How can India grow if the path to development of one section of its people is blocked?
* * *
The verdict should make the Government rethink on reservation for minorities. The judiciary has once again showed its ability to point out flaws in government policies.
* * *
The judiciary of late has been invalidating one after the other a series of government orders the latest being the minority status of AMU.
The question now is whether these government decisions had been vetted by the Law Ministry. If they had been, the legal department needs a thorough overhaul.
