Coordination committee meeting

PANAJI: All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Goa Margaret Alva will hold a co-ordination committee meeting of the coalition Government on Tuesday to take stock of the growing problems afflicting the government. Sources in the Congress said that the meeting will be the first one in the last three months and is likely to be stormy. It is likely to discuss the "land legislation" in Sattari taluk after the recent murder of a local businessman. Another issue likely to surface during the meeting, to be attended by four Ministers, is the controversy over the airport. — Special Correspondent

`Vaikunta Ekadasi'

HUBLI: Devotees of Balaji Mandir, Padmaraj Nagar, Gokul Nagar Hubli have organised a function to celebrate `Vaikunta Ekadasi' at 6 a.m. on Tuesday. The special entrance doors of Srivaishnav temples will be opened on the day, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

Youth festival

SIRSI: The Uttara Kannada district-level "Youth Festival-2005-06" will be held at Sirsi Marikamba Kalyana Mantapa on January 10. It is being organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports, Sports Authority of Karnataka, Uttara Kannada Zilla Panchayat, the taluk panchayat of Sirsi and the taluk Yuva Okkoota. MLA Vivekananda Vaidya will inaugurate the festival. — Correspondent

AIPJD to felicitate local body members

MYSORE: The All India Progressive Janata Dal (AIPJD) will felicitate its candidates elected to the zilla and taluk panchayat in the district, at the Town Hall here on Monday.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, AIPJD National President C.M. Ibrahim, AIPJD State President Satish Jharkiholi and MLAs H.C. Mahadevappa, K. Ventakesh, M. Mahadev, M.K. Somashekar and others are expected to participate in the function scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

Bus service to Udupi

MYSORE: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has deployed additional buses from Mysore to Udupi in view of the "Sudha Mangala" and "Paryaya Mangala" programmes scheduled to be held from January 7 to 17.

Subsidy released

MYSORE: The State Government has sanctioned a subsidy of Rs. 18 crores to various small-scale industries in Mysore, according to a press release from the Hebbal Industrialists' Association.

In addition to the pending subsidy, the association said the Government had also released Rs. 3 crores to 161 small-scale industries in the district. The list of 161 beneficiaries is available with the association. More details can be obtained on 98805-11991. — Staff Correspondent

Drawing competition

MYSORE: Universal Academy is holding a drawing competition for students at Cheluvamba Park on KRS Road from 10 a.m. on January 11. Academy begins Tulu classes

MANGALORE: The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy began its three-month Tulu classes here on Saturday. Classes will be held for two hours twice a week. Speaking after inaugurating the classes, H.V. Parshwanath, Deputy Commissioner, said public administration becomes easier if officials knew local language. It helps officials to communicate better with the people. Amrut Someshwar, writer, spoke. `Follow Western road safety model'

UDUPI: The Superintendent of Police, S. Murugan, said on Sunday that it is necessary to follow the road safety model of Western countries to reduce accidents. He was speaking at the valedictory function of the 17th National Road Safety Week organised by the District Police and the Regional Transport Authority here. Mr. Murugan said the number of road accidents has decreased in Udupi district. There is scope for reducing it further. MANGALORE: The Forest Department, in association with the Wild Life Institute of India and other agencies, will take up an all India co-predators, prey and habitat monitoring project/estimation between January 16 and 26. `Female foeticide widespread'

KOCHI: Thousands of sex determination tests take place across the country daily leading to widespread female foeticide, says Shanta Durge, founder of the Save The Girl Child movement based at Basavakalyan in Bidar district of Karnataka. Addressing presspersons here on Sunday, Dr. Durge said she would present the findings of a five-year study on the state of female foeticide in the country at the ongoing Obstetrics and Gynaecology Congress here on Monday. She said that the aim of the study was to highlight the problem of female foeticide. — Staff Reporter

Sahitya sammelan at Abbe Tumkur

GULBARGA: The ninth Gulbarga District Kannada Sahitya Sammelana will be held at the pilgrim centre of Abbe Tumkur near Yadgir on March 5 and 6. District parishat president Veerabhadra Simpi said this was decided at the preparatory meeting held at Abbe Tumkur under the chairmanship of Sri Gangadhara Swamiji of the Abbe Tumkur Mutt. Dharam Singh leaves for Delhi

Bangalore: Even as the impasse over the formation of some of the zilla and taluk panchayats continues, Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh left for New Delhi on Sunday, ostensibly to hold talks with Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram and other Union Ministers on the size of the State's annual plan for 2006-07.

Karnataka, whose annual Plan size for the current year is Rs. 13,500 crores, is seeking an increase to Rs.15,000 crores.

However, the main purpose of Mr. Singh's Delhi trip, the second in the last few days is to hold talks with AICC leaders on entering into alliances with the Janata Dal (S) or the AIPJD and the Samajwadi Party in Shimoga district in the zilla and taluk panchayats. — Special Correspondent

Youth advocates' federation set up

MANGALORE: The Karnataka Youth Advocates' Federation has been set up in Bangalore. A press note from K.S.N. Rajesh, advocate, here on Saturday stated that B. Raveendranath Rai had been elected honorary president of the federation.

Mr. Rajesh, joint secretary of the federation, is one of the four office-bearers from Dakshina Kannada to find a place in this newly constituted body. The others are Mr. Rai, Kishore and Bipin Rai. — Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: Playwright Chandrashekhar Kambar was felicitated here on Sunday. The function was presided over by poet Channaveer Kanvi. Critic Guruling Kapse delivered the felicitation address. TUMKUR: The Sri Shivaguru Bhaktamandali will organise the 55th `Anekalu muttina pallaki utsav of Gangadhareswara Swami' at Jayapura, here January 14.

Convenor of the mandali T.R. Shivalingaiah said in a press release here that bhajans and dasoha were been held daily during "Dhanurmasa."

Snap polls disfavoured

BANGALORE: With major political parties, including the coalition partners Congress and Janata Dal (S) talking of imminent mid-term elections, the Institute of Parliamentary Affairs has urged them to desist from contemplating such a move.

Institute secretary M.C. Shantamurthy, has in a letter to Governor T.N. Chaturvedi said though every political party must be ready to face elections at all times, they must ponder over the possible adverse implications of trying to curtail the term of the 12th legislature.

For one, Prof. Shantamurthy says, the preparation of the Karnataka budget 2006-07 and the planning process will be adversely affected. — Staff Reporter

Handed over

Dharmapuri: A couple keen on having a male child surrendered their third female child to the Cradle Baby Centre at the Dharmapuri Government Hospital on Sunday. According to sources, Vijaya, wife of Jayaraman of Thotlampatti had her third child a few days ago.

The couple who already have two daughters wanted the third to be a boy.

Since it was a girl they surrendered it to the Cradle Baby Centre.

Similarly, a newborn girl found abandoned in front of the Family Planning Ward at the Hospital was also handed over to the Centre.

Till date, the Centre has received 705 babies since its inception on April 13, 2002.
