Saran to hold talks in China

Diplomatic Correspondent

To discuss entire range of bilateral, regional, multilateral and international issues

NEW DELHI: Foreign Secretary Shyam Saran will hold talks with Chinese Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Wu Dawei in Beijing on January 9 and 10.

Diplomatic sources told this correspondent that Mr. Saran, who had left for China would discuss the entire gamut of bilateral, regional, multilateral and international issues with Mr. Wu.

It is for the second time that India and China are holding such a strategic dialogue; the first one was held here in January 2005.

`Global character'

The sources said the first dialogue was preparatory to the successful April visit of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao when several key agreements were signed.

The two sides agreed that time that the relations had acquired a global and strategic character. `

`The leaders of the two countries have, therefore, agreed to establish an India-China Strategic and Cooperative Partnership for Peace and Prosperity,'' a joint statement issued on April 11, 2005, said.

``Such a partnership is based on the principles of Panchsheel, mutual respect and sensitivity for each other's concerns and aspirations, and equality; provides a sound framework for an all-round and comprehensive development of bilateral relations based on mutual and equal security, development and prosperity of the two peoples; and contributes to jointly addressing global challenges and threats.

It reflects the readiness of the two sides to resolve outstanding differences in a proactive manner without letting them come in the way of the continued development of bilateral relations,'' the statement said.

The sources said the two sides were also working on a possible visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao to India some time this year.
