Law on right to recall sarpanch uncalled for, says Pawar

Special Correspondent

NASHIK: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Sunday rejected the recently passed Maharashtra law that gave voters the right to recall a village sarpanch. It was uncalled for and not envisaged by the Constitution makers, he said.

Mr. Pawar was speaking at the inaugural session of the convention of the State unit of the party. Mr. Pawar, who heads the committee on job reservation for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the private sector, said the committee had prepared its scheme and sent it to the Attorney-General for his opinion about its constitutional validity. He said most suicides were among cotton growers of the State and the Agriculture Ministry was considering a change in the crop pattern to improve the farmers' lot.

Increasing allocation

The Ministry is also working on a proposal to increase the budgetary allocation for the agriculture sector, which had fallen during the NDA rule to a mere 1.5 per cent as against allocations for the communication sector, which rose to 13 per cent. He said he would discuss the matter with the Finance Minister. He said farm credit had also slipped to Rs. 60,000 crore during the BJP rule.
