IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY: Rohan Castelino did well to beat Railways' Sachin Ratti.
BANGALORE: The spotlight was on the Indian juniors at the senior National badminton championship that entered the crucial last eight stage at the KBA courts here on Sunday. The 19-year-old Rohan Castelino of Karnataka shone brightest of them all, as he eclipsed the former National runner-up Sachin Ratti of the Railways in an engrossing 80-minute battle at 12-15, 15-8, 15-11 to enter the quarterfinals. Rohan's victory was all the more creditable as he came through a humdinger of a third round contest against Tanishq of Andhra Pradesh few hours earlier. Sachin Ratti who beat the former National champion and the second seed Abhinn Shyam Gupta in the third round seemed on course to the quarterfinals as he took the first game against a tentative Rohan. But Rohan who is a former National junior champion and a trainee of the Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, struck back strongly with good mix of attack and defence to claim the second game comfortably at 15-8. In the pulsating decider, Rohan with his all-court game, went for his shots, often diving full length for his returns and took a 7-4 lead. But he seemed to lose the momentum with some loose returns and the wily Sachin, digging deep into his experience, came up with telling winners and came within a striking distance at 11-13. But later, he tossed a return out and later misjudged the line to totter at 11-14 and the end came soon as he smashed over the baseline. The quarterfinal line up: Men: Arvind Bhat v Utsav Misra, Chetan Anand v Anand Pawar, Nikhil Kanetkar v Rohan Castelino and Thomas Kurian v Anup Sridhar .
