Rare literary treat for prisoners

Special Correspondent

`Dasavadhanam' regales them to the core

REFRESHING CHANGE: Inmates of district jail listening to `Dasavadhanam' at Ongole on Sunday.

ONGOLE : Some 150 inmates of the district jail had a rare experience of witnessing "Dasavadhanam", a literary feat by Narayam Balasubramanyam here on Sunday.

Akshara Sahithi Samithi and TTD Dharma Prachara Parishad had jointly organised the programme to create some literary taste among the prison inmates.

Mr. Balasubramanyam faced a barrage of questions from 10 prucchakas (questioners) and regaled the audience. The organisers had requested both the `avadhani' and the questioners to keep the appreciation level of the audience in mind while conducting the programme so that the prison inmates, who are mostly illiterate, can enjoy it.

Mr. Balasubramanyam read out poems instantaneously to answer questions asked to meet different parameters of avadhanam. A questioner, for instance, asked him to read out a poem to indicate that blessed are those who commit crime.

The avadhani read out a poem to say that blessed are those who commit a crime if they concentrated their mind on God. Another questioner asked for a poem to the effect that the students cried as their teacher became pregnant. Avadhani replied, "As the lady teacher became pregnant, the students cried because they feared that she might go on maternity leave without completing their syllabus".

The feat on filling up 16 squares with numbers which totalled 73 vertically, horizontally and diagonally as part of "Yantrika Ganitham" too won the appreciation of the prisoners.

Jail Superintendent G. Veeranandan and Jailor Rajesawara Rao too participated in the programme.

The inmates thanked the organisers for providing them novel entertainment.
