BHUBANESWAR: Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury on Sunday condemned the killing of 12 tribals in a police firing at Kalinga Nagar, and demanded that the Orissa Government take immediate steps to solve the problems of the tribals facing displacement. Addressing a press conference here after his return from Kalinga Nagar, Mr. Yechury blamed the BJD-BJP Government for the police firing. The injured tribals had bullet marks on their back, he said. The CPI (M) leader said the State Government should not go ahead with its unilateral policy of evicting tribals by use of force in the name of industrialisation and development. "The Government should finalise the compensation and rehabilitation package after consulting the tribals who were to be displaced to make space for industries. The problems pertaining to displacement should be settled by involving the tribals in the development process." Observing that there were a lot of ambiguities over the tribals' right to land and use of forest resources, Mr. Yechury said the Government should not take any measure that would be in contrary to the Tribal Rights Bill pending in Parliament. Mr. Yechury also underlined the need for a complete ban on export of iron ore and other minerals.
