Pondicherry: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has said that he has directed all the banks to ensure that credit requirements of farmers were met, so that they could carry on their work without any problem. He was distributing loans worth Rs. 5.5 crores to members of more than 630 women self help groups (SHGs) at a seminar marking celebration of International Micro Credit programme organised by the Corporation for Development of Women and Handicapped Persons Limited on Sunday Mr. Chidambaram said that he had asked all the banks to bring in additionally every year fifty-lakh farmers under farm loan scheme and meet their requirements. Farmers should be relieved from clutches of private moneylenders, he added. Development of infrastructure such as irrigation projects, airports, roads, ports, railway facilities, telecom and power projects was the priority for the Central Government. The development of infrastructure projects would generate employment, savings, investment and economic growth of the country. This would be of help for ameliorating the welfare of the people at large, Mr. Chidambaram said. He also highlighted the formulation of policies and developmental programmes to ensure that the inflation rate of inflation also was brought down steeply. The Chief Minister Rangasamy requested Mr. Chidambaram to ensure that entrepreneurs starting industries in the Union Territory were extended concessions and incentives to launch their projects. Our Kancheepuram Staff Reporter reports: Mr.Chidambaram addressing a loan disbursement function at Chengalpattu, expressed the confidence that the target for extending loan facility to women self-help groups and ryots can be achieved easily going by the disbursement of these loans in various districts of Tamil Nadu and in other States.
