Meet seeks probe into Kerala sex scandal case

Staff Reporter

Urges people to be wary of mafia's nefarious activities

KOZHIKODE: A resolution adopted at a mass convention held here on Sunday demanded an investigation into the circumstances under which prime prosecution witnesses in the Kozhikode ice-cream parlour sex scandal case had retracted from their earlier statements and turned hostile.

The resolution read out by Anweshi president K. Ajitha appealed to members of civil society to be aware of the crossroads at which Kerala society now stood, and the unprecedented onslaught of a nefarious mafia which sought to ride the crest of power and hold control over everything, including natural resources of the State.

The people of Kerala must be consciously aware of the dangerous turn of events in the Suryanelli and Kiliroor sexual harassment cases, and how the law was being subverted to protect the powerful.

It has become imperative for the National Human Rights Commission and the National Women's Commission to intervene considering the gravity of the situation arising from the activities of this new class and the turn of events in the ice cream parlour case.

Writers, cultural leaders, social activists and people from all walks of life were present on the occasion. An Assembly march will be organised in the first week of February.

Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan, who inaugurated the convention, while likening the ice-cream parlour case to the Best Bakery case relating to the Gujarat carnage, said the turn of events was a shame on the State.

"The convention is a fight for justice. Ultimately, truth and justice will prevail despite repeated setbacks in the case," he said.

He alleged that the Government had stepped in to save the culprit when the Kozhikode Sessions Court Judge II had noted that the name of the former Minister, P.K. Kunhalikutty, appeared seven times in the charge sheet. The Public Prosecutor had acted in the most irresponsible manner.

The report of the Director of Public Prosecution had allegedly indicted Mr. Kunhalikutty but the Government had preferred to go by the opinion of the Advocate- General not to frame charge sheet against the former Minister. Sukumar Azhikode, critic, described the turn of events in the ice-cream parlour case as horrific.
