Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry likely to have gender cell
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD
: A gender cell is likely to be set up in the Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry by the year-end.
It will look into issues of concern to non-resident Indians and people of Indian origin, especially women, such as failed and fraudulent marriages, problems of emigrant women abroad, more so in the Gulf, and adoption of children from India for NRI women.
The suggestion to set up such a cell was made by the Women Power Connect (WPC), a national-level umbrella organisation of women's groups, its president Ranjana Kumari said at a press conference here on Sunday.
Ms. Kumari said the WPC, which was working towards betterment of women, had made several recommendations to address the problems faced by NRI women in their adopted countries, mainly the US.
She welcomed the proposed bill on compulsory registration of marriages, as it would help solve marriage-related issues of Non-Resident Indians/Persons of Indian Origin.
The registration certificates would enable women take legal action in the event of failed or fraudulent marriages between NRIs/PIOs grooms and Indian brides in the US/UK.
