ERODE : A lorry driver was robbed of Rs 37000 at the point of revolver on Saturday night.

A lorry going to Erode from Andhra Pradesh was waylaid near Uthaiyur by some persons in an ambulance. They got down, robbed him and escaped. Police have registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Electrocuted

ERODE: While engaged in repairing a tube light a power loom worker was electrocuted.

According to police, Velumani, 36 of Kalliampudur, was engaged in repairing a tube light in his house when he accidentally touched a live wire and was electrocuted. - Staff Reporter

Grievances forum

ERODE: The Superintending Engineer, Erode Electricity Distribution Circle, S. Ramalingam said that as per the directions of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, a Consumer Redressal Forum has been formed in the Electricity Distribution Circle.

It will meet on January 9 (Monday) in the office of the Superintending Engineer.

SBI branch inaugurated

SALEM : Executive Director of Salem Steel Plant (SSP), Steel Authority of India Limited, M. Roy inaugurated the redesigned and fully air conditioned branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) in the plant campus here recently.

The SSP branch had extended the business hours up to 7.30 p.m. on weekdays.

The Deputy General Manager of SBI Zonal Office, Coimbatore, R. Kalyanakrishnan and Assistant General Manager of Regional Business Office, Salem, N. Arun were present. The general managers, deputy general managers of the plant, employees of SSP and customers attended the programme.

Opportunities for Ex-servicemen

Tiruchi: Ex-servicemen from Tiruchi, Karur and Perambalur districts willing to join the Home Guard could approach the office of the Assistant Director, Ex-Servicemen Welfare.

The services of the Home Guards would be utilised for a minimum of four days and a maximum period of 16 days, a release added.

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 116.10 feet on Sunday.

Commits suicide

Tuticorin : A 19-year-old student committed suicide by hanging from the roof at his house situated at Caldwell Colony here on Saturday.

The police said Rangaraj, a third-year BSc student at V. O. C. College, was suffering from chronic stomach ailments for quite some time and hence, decided to take the extreme step.

CM thanked

Tuticorin : A meeting organised by farmers to thank the Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for introducing a plethora of welfare schemes was held here on Saturday.

Speaking at the function, Pollachi V Jayaraman, Minister for Food and Co-operation, said it was unfortunate that the Centre had increased the price of rice meant to be supplied through Public Distribution System.

Vacation court sitting notified

MADURAI : The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court Registry has notified the arrangements made for a vacation court sitting during the pongal holidays between January 9 and 15. According to it, Justice R. Reghupathi will be the vacation judge and he shall sit single on January 12 to dispose of urgent matters.

S. Ramamurthy, Deputy Registrar (Judicial) and C. Selvaraj, Assistant Registrar will serve as vacation officers. The Registry will function between 10 am and 4.30 pm on January 9 and 10 and the applications seeking to take up the matters should be presented along with necessary documents to the vacation officers before 1.30 p.m. on January 10. — Staff Reporter

Rs. 1 crore announced for Bar Council

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced Rs. 1 crore to the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu for welfare schemes taken up by the council. This was a sequel to the representation made by council chairman K. Chandramohan to her last week, says a release issued by the Chief Minister. — Special Correspondent

Bridge across Coleroon to be constructed

CHENNAI: A high-level bridge would be constructed across the Coleroon connecting Sengariyur village in Tiruchi district and Alamelpuram Poondi village in Thanjavur district, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa announced on Sunday. Officials of the Highways department have been instructed to complete the construction of the Rs. 34-crore bridge at the earliest, she said, adding this would benefit people in 33 villages. The decision followed the representation from the local people. At present, the people have to cross the 1.2-km wide river by walking on sand bags kept on the watercourse. They also suffer hardship during rainy season and heavy flow in the river. Otherwise, they have to cover 57 km by road from one end of the river to another. — Special Correspondent

Heroin seized, 2 held

CHENNAI: The Coast Guard and the Narcotics Control Bureau officials seized 4.3 kg heroin and arrested two persons on Sunday. Coast Guard and the NCB, Chennai, identified those held as Thangadurai (45) and C. Maria Siluvai (45), both residents of Tuticorin. The heroin was to be transhipped to a boat from Sri Lanka. Personnel of both organisations searched the area last night, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Two die in accident

KARUR: Two persons died and eight were injured in a road accident near here on Sunday.

Srinivasan (35) and Sembar (37), travelling in a tractor were crushed to death when a Coimbatore-bound State Transport Corporation bus from Karaikal collided with it at Meenakshivalasu near Thennilai. Eight bus passengers, who sustained injuries, were admitted to a private hospital here. — Staff Reporter

Security stepped up in Dharmapuri

DHARMAPURI: In the wake of the death anniversary of naxal leader Ravindran January 10, the district is being turned into a fortress by deployment of policemen at all vital installations. Ravindran was reportedly killed in an encounter at Perungadu Kattu Kottai near Maarandahalli in 2000.

According to police sources, following an alert of a possible naxalite strike, policemen armed with automatic weapons have been deployed at all checkposts in the district, including Thoppur, Karimangalam and Mahendiramanagalam to prevent the entry of naxalites or smuggling of lethal weapons or explosives. — Staff Reporter
