DIC(K) trying to forge Left secular platform: Murali

Special Correspondent

DIC(K) president's padayatra concludes today

Thiruvananthapuram: DIC(K) president K. Muraleedharan's 47-day-long padayatra will conclude on Monday, with the party looking forward to a new set of developments that would find it on the winning side of Kerala politics.

As Mr. Muraleedharan entered the last day of his padayatra, he was received by a debate on whether the DIC(K) should be included in the LDF, with the CPI, the second largest partner in the Opposition coalition, making it clear that it was opposed to the move. Mr. Muraleedharan and the veteran, K Karunakaran, strongly reacted to the CPI stand. Mr. Muraleedharan stated that his party had not submitted an application for entry, but was only trying to forge a larger Left secular platform. He said his party had supported the LDF in the Assembly and Lok Sabha byelections only to strengthen this platform. The DIC(K)'s entry into the LDF was a matter to be discussed later, he added. Mr. Karunakaran, in an interview to a private television channel, said the voices of dissent were isolated ones. CPI (M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said a final decision would be taken after discussions in the LDF.

Mr. Muraleedharan's padayatra named `Navakerala Yatra' completed 843 km. covering 13 districts. According to a DIC (K) statement, Mr. Muraleedharan attended more than 122 major public meetings, and thousands of other smaller functions during the padayatra, which was flagged off on November 24. The yatra was undertaken to explain to the people the reasons for forming a new party as well as to get sanction of the party workers for the Left democratic secular alliance and mobilise party funds.

The statement claimed that the 843-km padayatra across the State was a record of sorts, as no other political leader had undertaken such an arduous task in recent years. The yatra was mainly along the National Highway, though other roads were also tread to cover Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts. On the concluding day on Monday, the party proposed to hold a rally from Kesavadasapuram to the valedictory venue at Puthirikandam Maidan.
