THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI and the RSP have criticised the Union Government's decision to slash food subsidy. In separate statements issued here on Saturday, both the parties said through this decision, the Government had created a situation where the poor would find it extremely difficult to survive. The Government, besides increasing the prices of rice and wheat sold through the ration shops, had reduced the quantum of food grains allocated for the public distribution system. The decision is certain to lead to a steep rise in the cost of food grains in the market, affecting all sections of the people, the CPI said. The CPI said the Union Government, while taking this decision, had violated the spirit of the Common Minimum Programme (CMP). The CMP includes a promise that the Government will strengthen the public distribution system and ensure food security for all sections of the people. The CPI would organise demonstrations in various centres in the State on January 11 to protest against the Union Government's decision. The RSP, in its statement, alleged that the Government had slashed food subsidy on the dictates of the World Trade Organisation. The RSP(Marxist) and the Janata Dal(S) also issued statements condemning the Government's decision. The Kerala Civil Supplies Officers' Federation, in a statement, said the decision would lead to starvation deaths in the country.
