Three emergency relief centres for accident victims launched

ERODE : The State Government has granted Rs. 50,000 each to the student, whose father or mother dies in an accident and the district administration is collecting details of the accident victims, said the District Collector, D. Karthikeyan on Saturday. He was delivering the valedictory for the Road Safety Week celebrations.

The Collector said that the Government had started three Accident Emergency Relief centres in the district. This had helped in saving 688 persons involved in 501 accidents. He urged the people to stick to traffic rules.

The Superintendent of Police, P. Nagarajan said 85 per cent of the accidents were reported during the day. Lorry, bus and other vehicle drivers should keep away from alcohol. Every month around 800 drunken driving cases were being registered.

The Resident Medical Officer, Erode Government Headquarters Hospital, R.P. Sakthivel said free blood was being given to the needy patients. Nachimuthu, President of the Lorry Owners Association, wanted the Police personnel to take stringent action against the lorries and buses taking overload and over speed. The Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation representative, Sakthivel Murugan said every year they were replacing damaged buses. The Regional Transport Officer Gurusamy, Erode Bus Owners Association President, K.S. Palanisamy, Driver Nachimuthu and others spoke.

The Collector and Superintendent of Police distributed awards to 22 Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation drivers who had a track record of 25 years without accident.
