ERODE: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has reduced fault rate in telephones and is providing efficient service to customers, said the General Manager of BSNL, Erode, E.M. Abraham. Talking to newsmen here on Saturday, he said last year the telephone fault rate was 5.5 per cent and it had come down to 5 per cent now and before the end of March 2006, it would be reduced to 4.5 per cent. For this, he said the field employees had been geared up and also strict monitoring was carried out over the functioning of all the 1.89 lakh telephone connections in the district. The General Manager said the revenue from the district had shot up by 10 per cent. The revenue was Rs. 100 crores last year and till the end of December last, they had earned a revenue of Rs. 106 crores. He hoped that before the end of this financial year, the revenue from basic phones would touch Rs. 110 crores. Steps had been taken to provide telephone connections to hill areas. Towers would be erected in Erahalli, Kadambur and nearby areas. Already, cellular, WLL and basic phone facilities had been made available in Thalawady.
Hill areas to be covered
By the end of March, the erection of towers would be completed and almost all the hill areas would be covered with telephone facility. He said it was proposed to install 120 towers for cellular service in the district and as on date, 70 towers had been completed and before March 2006, the remaining towers would be erected. A total of 29,023 post-paid cellular connections and 35,625 pre-paid connections had been given in the district. He said cellular connections were given on-demand. He said heavy demand was seen for broadband service and so far, 333 connections had been given and 1,145 were in waiting list. Several new packages had been introduced for basic phone and cellular service users by the BSNL and wanted the customers to avail the same.
