GO IN FOR THE BEST: The handloom expo on bedspreads and silk saris in Erode has evoked a positive response so far. Photo: M.Govarthan
ERODE: Within seven days about Rs ten lakh worth handloom products were sold in the handloom exhibition-cum-sale conducted by the Handloom Department here. There is a vast demand for handloom bed sheets, bedspreads and silk saris.
On behalf of the Handloom Department a 15-day sales-cum-exhibition of handloom varieties has been conducted from January 2 to 16.
Preferences
There is an appreciable demand for handloom bed sheets because of winter and Sabarimala season. A North Indian woman, Pratheema Babulal and family members, who came to Erode for a family function, said that once in two years her relatives would send them three pairs of handloom bed sheets from Erode.
This year she selected one herself. Some locals were also buying handloom silk saris for Pongal. Small towels and napkins also enjoy a huge demand. More than 50 stalls have been put up at the expo. Till January 16 the expo would be there without a break and daily from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. people could visit the stalls. Thirty per cent rebate is also provided for the products sold in the expo.
