Amarinder thanks PM for approving science institute

Chandigarh: The Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, on Sunday thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for giving approval to set up an Indian Institute of Science Education & Research (IISER) in Punjab, first of its kind in Northern India.

Expressing profound gratitude to Dr. Manmohan Singh, Capt. Singh said that this Institute would certainly go a long way in imbibing the scientific temper among our youth besides giving a fillip to the science education and research in the State.

"The creation of this institute is a culmination of a long standing desire of the scientific community in Northern India to set up a high calibre institute in which science teaching and education will be totally integrated with the state-of-the-art research," the Chief Minister said.

He hoped that this Institute would act as a catalyst to forge strong relationship with the universities and other educational institutes in the vicinity to share faculty, research & development and infrastructure to strive for global level excellence in the field of science education & research.

Capt. Singh viewed the setting up of this prestigious institute well-timed and appropriate at this juncture, when Punjab was being perceived as the most preferred investment destination in the world due to its congenial and investor friendly climate.

The Chief Minister said IISER would have programme of study in various inter-disciplinary areas of biological, mathematical and computer sciences, as well as physical, chemical, life and material sciences and expected to have about 2,000 students in integrated master, doctoral and post doctoral programme, besides about 200 faculty members. The Chief Minister further said that the people of Punjab were really indebted to the Prime Minister for his benevolence and vision for taking personal initiative for the overall development and growth in the state that was apparent from the package announced by him at Ludhiana during his last visit, which included development of Ludhiana city as a modern metro under the National Urban Renewal Mission to attract prospective entrepreneurs and investors in a big way.

Besides, Dr. Singh also announced construction of a ring road around Ludhiana, to extend the Delhi-Kolkata high-speed rail corridor to Amritsar and to set up a new airport of international standards in the State.

Capt Singh urged Dr. Manmohan Singh to also give approval to the State government's proposal pending with the Central Government for establishing an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Punjab to fulfil a long felt need for higher institutions of professional learning in the state to enable the students to become professionally more competitive. -- UNI
