Panchayat chief held

CHENNAI:
The city Central Crime Branch police arrested a panchayat president and another person on charges of cheating and forgery in connection with a land sale in Puzhal. According to the police officials, V. Barnabas, president of the Puzhal panchayat and Thiruvallur district Congress vice-president, aided three persons in buying land owned by one Parthasarathy and four others in 2003. The accused apparently threatened and forged the signature of complainant Parthasarathy of Puzhal, to transfer the ownership of 56 cents of land in Jawaharlal Nehru Nagar. The buyers of the piece of land were Vinod Patel, Dinesh Patel and Thara.
