CHENNAI: Hundreds of eager visitors thronged the University Union Grounds in Chetpet to watch the Madras Canine Club's dog show on Sunday. Breeders, trainers and owners proudly exhibited their dogs while visitors clicked photos on camera phones. From ambling Neapolitan mastiffs to prancing miniature pinschers, several breeds were on show. Indian breeds including Combai, Chippiparai and Rajapalayam also participated. The Best Dog of both the 68th and 69th championships held on the same day was a Wire Fox Terrier called Spike. Five-year-old Spike, based in Bangalore, is owned by Kalpana Setty. Spike has two international titles and was also the champ at the Bangalore Canine Club Show recently. Primarily white with black, tan and ginger markings on his coat, Spike was a delight to watch. The Best Puppy award went to a Dachshund called Vito Vernon (68th championship) and a Doberman named Sanjana's Gilda (69th championship). The titles of Best Dogs bred in India went to a Dachshund and a German Shepherd. Although they were tired at the end of the day, the dogs put up a good show till the final round at 8 p.m. Heads resting on paws, they lay near the owners till they had to go into the ring. Some of the dogs had a whole line of cups beside them for winning in different categories. The participants were from various cities. A St. Bernard called Kocaine came from Bangalore, Pomeranians Whisky and Polly arrived by train from Hyderabad, a Weimaraner named Alice arrived from Tiruchy and a German Shepherd puppy came from Mysore. Closer home, Anna Nagar had the most participants, including a magnificent Great Dane called Marcus. Visitors who wanted to buy puppies exchanged numbers with dog breeders. A Neapolitan mastiff pup could cost as much as Rs. 30,000 and a Collie Rs. 40,000 depending on their pedigree, but they add to the pride of the owner, said trainer Srinivas. Jackie Perry, Ekarat Sangkunakup and Kikuhiko Kashiwagi judged the event.
