CHENNAI: All India Radio's contribution to the growth of Carnatic music over decades came in for praise on Sunday with R. Krishnaswamy, president of the Federation of City Sabhas, saying that the national broadcaster was instrumental in getting the music the recognition it deserved.

Addressing a function organised by the Ramani's Academy of Flute, on the concluding day of its 23rd music festival, to felicitate veteran flautist Tambhi Kottai T.S. Ramamoorthy, Mr. Krishnaswamy said AIR also played a pivotal role in providing the artists with a lot of exposure.

The impact of the national broadcaster was such that "many of the musicians were known by their concerts on the AIR," Mr. Krishnaswamy said, adding that he was seeing Mr. Ramamoorthy — whose career as per the citation presented by the Academy spanned four decades — for the first time.

The AIR Chennai Station Director, K. Srinivasa Raghavan, said the radio owed its popularity to the musicians.

Noting that Carnatic music is one of the strong fundamentals of the AIR, he said some 100 concerts in the current music season had been recorded and broadcast on the FM `Gold' channel and on the Direct-To-Home network.

He hailed the decision of the Academy to honour the veteran instrumentalist.

V.V. Sundaram, a patron of Carnatic music in the U.S., presented the veteran with the citation and a shawl. Hailing the contribution of N. Ramani, renowned flautist and founder of the Ramani's Academy of Flute, to music, he said the Academy had trained over 1,000 people since its inception in 1983.

Mr. Ramani said he had grown up listening to the concerts of Mr. Ramamoorthy.

In his short acceptance speech, Mr. Ramamoorthy, thanked the Academy for felicitating him.
