CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, requesting them to withdraw the decision to effect a cut in allotment of foodgrains through the PDS and increase the issue price. In separate fax messages, Mr. Karunanidhi said: "Poor people, who are solely dependent on the foodgrains distributed through fair price shops run by the Government, are upset over the revision in price and quantum." The situation in Tamil Nadu was particularly bad since people "have been put to a lot of suffering and hardship continuously for the past few years due to drought, tsunami and floods. Therefore, any revision in price will adversely affect their interests and economic condition." He wanted the decision withdrawn "immediately." Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss said his party would insist that the Centre reconsider its decision. The Centre's announcement was not final.
