EASING CONGESTION: Work in progress as part of the junction improvement plan in front of Jubilee Bus Station in Secunderabad.
HYDERABAD: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has taken up the junction improvement and redesigning work at the Jubliee Bus Station (JBS) that has as many as five roads including those leading towards the Secunderabad Club, Picket, Diamond Point, Lamba theatre, NCC Directorate and so on.
The SCB decided to take up a traffic engineering design based on lane system prevalent in countries abroad. "The junction has lot of chaotic vehicular movement causing accidents. Our very basic engineering plan is to ease the flow for vehicles and allow space for pedestrians," explained G.A. Raj Expedith, Architect, (Ph.No 27813397) of Raj Expedith Associates, designers for SCB.
Protection for pedestrians
The main road is to have four lanes each with a waiting lane on either side or slip roads to enable channelisation of vehicles into any of the roads plus the bus station. Other than distinct road markings, the roads are to have lighting bollards to indicate paths, choverns tapering edges of the median dividers fitted with cobbled stones for alerting drivers to stick to their paths, etc. Speed reducing obstacles are being built alongside zebra crossings on all road stretches. Pedestrians crossing the roads are to get protection in the form of iron railings at the central medians. A traffic island separates the two intersections at JBS and Kendriya Vidyalaya Picket a painted yellow box will mark these. With encroachments removed on the roadside, a bus bay for city buses has been made adjacent to bus station. A paid parking lot and a food court are also to come along side as suggested by SCB Executive Officer T. Arockianathan.
Facelift for garden
Cantonment Gardens is also to get a much-needed facelift. Encroachments are being removed alongside the open drain and the more than five acre park will have a fountain, amphitheatre, skating rink, turf for yoga, walking path, canteen, parking lot, etc. protected by a solar fence. The entire project is to cost about Rs. 2.5 crores and the SCB has also given permission for redesigning of junctions at Trimulgherry, Balamrai, Tivoli and 17 others.
