THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Compared to the previous years the number of crimes reported in the city has come down significantly, Inspector-General, South Zone,T. P. Sen Kumar said on Sunday.

The number of murders and rapes, in particular, has come down when compared to the pervious years, he said. Mr. Sen Kumar was speaking at a police-public interaction for the areas coming under the city police commissioner organised at the Nandavanam police camp, here.

The IG told the representatives of residents associations and citizens who came for the adalat that the city police commissioner had not issued any `shoot-at-sight' orders to officers going for night patrols. "The commissioner had only asked SIs and officers above that rank to carry small arms with them purely as a precautionary measure," Mr. Sen Kumar said.

As many 120 persons presented their complaints and suggestions during the interaction. While some cases were about marital violence, others were about complaints to which the local police were yet to find any solution.

When a man from Kovalam told the IG that he received no help from the police control room when he called in to complain about a policeman who beat him up, the IG told the police officers present that such a thing should not be repeated.

Mr. Sen Kumar later told The Hindu that representatives of residents' associations were very appreciative of the city police.
