Hundreds take part in carnival rally

Staff Reporter

Revenue from the carnival to be spent on cancer patients

KOCHI: The Ernakulam Carnival was held in the city, with hundreds of people participating in a rally organised from the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium up to the Xavierian Ground, Katrikadavu, on Sunday evening.

The rally, organised under the banner of Smart Kaloor, was flagged off by Deputy Mayor C.K. Manishankar. Leading the rally was a caparisoned elephant bearing the emblem of the carnival. It was followed by percussionists and volunteers, holding the rally-proclamation banner.

Close behind them were people from socio-cultural and political fields. School students and students from the Kerala Sports Council too participated in the rally. Among the art and dance forms that were presented were Shingarimelam, Pookavadi, Pulikali, Pavakali, Parichamuttu, Tiruvathirakali, Oppana, Gokulakavadi, Theyyam and Garudan Melam.

Competitions were held in fancy dress, two-wheeler and four-wheeler fancy dress, best-dressed Santa Claus and best-dressed angel. Tableaux too formed part of the rally. A free-style dance event and fireworks display too were held. Judges were seated at different points on the stretch to assess the performers.

The spirit of rally was dampened to an extent by unforeseen rains. Traffic was disrupted for around two hours between Palarivattom and Kaloor because of the rally. A public meeting was held later in the evening at the Xavierian Ground. The funds generated from the carnival would be spent on cancer patients who cannot afford costly treatment, said the organisers.
