Student lists process to recycle impure water

Only one from Andaman and Nicobar for Children's Science Congress

Mohd. Salmaan

HYDERABAD: "Reverse osmosis can be used in the Andaman and Nicobar islands to desalinate groundwater that became saline post-tsunami on account of seawater infiltration," says Mohammed Salmaan, who attended the Children's Science Congress in Hyderabad.

Salmaan was the sole representative from the islands to present a paper at the Congress. Students from other parts of India had presented papers on the theme, `Harnessing Water Resources for a Better Future'.

Salmaan's paper, which deals with raw water treatment, discusses reverse osmosis as a means to recycle drain water, which in turn can be used to recharge groundwater.

Reverse osmosis is a process to remove impurities in water. While it is commonly used for desalination, very few organisations use it for raw water treatment, he says. He explains, "Apart from sewage, rainwater that flows into the drains often gets collected in one place, getting contaminated. A reverse osmosis unit will help recycle such water." Our unit consists of a raw water collector tank. When ozone gases are introduced, they break up into nascent oxygen and molecular oxygen. Molecular oxygen mixes in water to make it healthier while nascent oxygen acts as a disinfectant. This water passes through a reverse osmosis membrane. The membrane, which is semi-permeable, filters the water, draining out germs. Water thus collected is used for recharging groundwater, he explains.
