MADURAI: Every year over 10,000 people died in road accidents in the State and traffic education and awareness programmes would help avoid such accidents, the Commissioner of Police, Narinder Pal Singh, said. Giving away prizes to winners of various competitions organised for students in connection with Road Safety Week that concluded on Saturday, Mr. Singh said that despite the number of two-wheelers and four-wheelers on roads going up, the number of accidents in the city had come down last year. The city police had been taking various steps to prevent accidents such as introducing one-way traffic and regulating heavy vehicles during rush hours to ease traffic flow. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), S. Davidson Devasirvatham, said that though the number of accidents in the city had decreased last year, the number of lives lost was higher than that of previous years. He advised students not to lose their nerves and be cautious while driving vehicles. The Regional Transport Officer (North), R. M. Sundaram, wanted the students to obey traffic signals and follow road rules to make 2007 an accident-free year. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), Najmul Hoda, and the Medical Director, Meenakashi Mission Hospital and Research Centre, V.N. Rajasekaran, were present.
