STATE SUPPORT: Speaker K. Kalimuthu inaugurates a sports meet in the city on Sunday Photo: S. James
MADURAI: The Government is keen on improving sports infrastructure in the State and welfare of sportspersons, said Assembly Speaker K. Kalimuthu. Inaugurating the 23rd State-level Bharathiar Day Sports Meet for higher secondary school students here on Sunday, he said it was the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government that took initiative to establish a sports university in the State. Unlike other States, the Tamil Nadu Government had always encouraged sportspersons. "They should make use of the opportunity as they continue to get the support of the Government." Presiding over the function, District Collector D. Raajendiran listed the opportunities available for sportspersons. Reservations in job and professional colleges were available for outstanding sports talents, he said and added that the Government had declared a cash award of Rs.1 lakh for the coach instrumental in bringing out the best performance in a sportsperson. Hence, students should give equal importance to studies and sports. Earlier, K. Sridevi, Chief Educational Officer welcomed the gathering. MLAs S.M. Seenivel, R. Samy and P. Ponnambalam, participated.
