NEW DELHI: Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on Sunday exhorted cadets of National Cadet Corps to rise above regionalism and sectarianism to make a united and prosperous India. "Youths should adopt our traditional values of honesty, cooperation and integrity to take the nation in a proper direction," Mr. Shekhawat said while inaugurating the NCC Republic Day Camp 2006 in the Capital. Expressing serious concern over falling human values in the era of globalisation, the Vice-President said today's youths should follow the path of truth, honesty and humility. Simply aping the West would not help India in shaping its future. "While adopting the modern technology and methods of development we should not forget our national ethos," he cautioned. "It is a sheer paradox that despite there being age old traditions of morality and ethics in our country, there has been such a steep decline in our value system," Mr. Shekhawat pointed out, adding that despite having excelled in different sectors including agriculture, information technology, industries, defence and space, the nation still faced the problems of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, inequality and violence. Youths of today need to face this as a challenge and ensure that India's future was very rich and prosperous where every citizen was treated equal. "The youth are our most valuable resource. How the nation tackles the challenges and marches forward in the decades ahead will depend much on you, your strength and courage, discipline and dedication," he added. Mr. Shekhawat said the annual camp, where around 1,800 cadets from all over the country were participating, was like "mini India" where the country's various shades of religious and linguistic colours were truly reflected. During the event, the Vice-President was given a guard of honour by an NCC contingent comprising cadets from all the three wings -- Army, Navy and Air Force.
