Coimbatore: The number of vehicles on the road in Coimbatore district has increased by 80,000 during the last one calendar year, Collector S. Kosalaraman said on Sunday. Speaking at the valedictory of the 17th Road Safety Week celebrations organised by the Transport Department, the Collector said that due to growing affluence and falling prices in the automobile sector, the number of vehicles on roads are increasing day-by-day. All these vehicles had to use the same motorable space available thus leading to congestion and accidents. He underlined the need for providing stress relief programme to professional drivers. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has started organising stress relief programmes for the drivers and the Collector urged others in the transport sector to follow suit. He along with the Deputy Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore Circle, K. Yogarajan distributed prizes to nearly 55 students who had won prizes in various competitions.Mr. Yogarajan said that the programmes would be made an annual affair.
