`Bioinformatics gaining importance in many fields'

Seminar throws light on drug development


Prizes for the best three papers were presented to A. Mahalakshmi, Lecturer, Department of Microbiology, Lady Doak College (1st), B. Vimal, II M.Sc. Biochemistry, Srimad Andavan Arts College, Trichy (2nd) and A. Shilpa, II M.Sc. Biochemistry, Dr. G. R. D. College of Science, Coimbatore (3rd).

Coimbatore: Molecular structure, drug development and algorithms were discussed at a three-day seminar on bioinformatics at the G R D. College of Science, here recently.

B. Thiagarajan, Coordinator, Department of Bioinformatics, introduced the subject of the seminar. D. Padmanaban, Correspondent of the college, presided over the inaugural function. There were 85 participants from eight institutions around the country.

Sushmita Mitra, Professor, Machine Intelligence Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, explained the use of algorithms and databases, besides data mining to extract information from large quantities of information. She emphasised soft computing, artificial neural networks and `Roulette wheel' selection.

Georg Peters, Professor, Department of Computer Science and Mathematics, Munich University of Applied Sciences, Munich, Germany, discussed the principles of clustering, which governed the arrangement of similar objects in a group.

Manju Bansal, Professor, Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, explained the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid for participants from a non-biology background and gave an introduction to the `Central Dogma of Life'.

Prizes went to the following participants for the best three papers presented during the seminar: A. Mahalakshmi, Lecturer, Department of Microbiology, Lady Doak College (1st), B. Vimal, II M.Sc.
