Abilympics zonals
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
As many as 165 adults with special needs, some associated with an organisation, attended the South Zone Regionals of the Abilympics conducted on January 7 and 8, 2006.
They competed in 29 events. Seventy-eight winners of the gold, silver and bronze medals will participate in the Nationals to be held in Delhi later this year.
Visitors, onlookers and judges were fascinated by the level of skill displayed by the chess team, where the moves made by a person with hearing/speech impairment had to be called out to the opponent who was visually impaired. There was also a chess team of persons with visual impairment, who played the game by feeling the board.
In the evening, the contestants turned team players in the cultural programme on the theme `nation'. Music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja performed for the crowd.
