Shop owners' appeal to administration

SHIMOGA: Shop owners at Shivappa Nayak Market made a representation to the Deputy Commissioner T.K. Anilkumar here on Monday not to allow the municipal council to demolish the market as it would inconvenience them. They presented a memorandum to the district administration. They also took a delegation to the municipal council requesting the administration not to go ahead with its proposed move to demolish the market. They said, "We are prepared to pay enhanced rent but do not demolish the market." — Special Correspondent

`Declare Netaji Jayanti an official festival'

BIDAR: The Anyaya Virudh Horata Samiti has urged the State Government to celebrate Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti as a national festival. Netaji's contribution to the country's liberation is great. But he has not got his due. All government offices, institutions and public sector undertakings should be instructed to observe the Jayanti on December 23 every year, samiti president Shamanna Bavge said in a memorandum to the Chief Minister N Dharam Singh. — Staff Correspondent

Kerosene seized

RAICHUR: Sindhanur police have arrested Shivappa (36) and recovered three barrels of kerosene reserved for public distribution estimated at Rs. 5,000 from him while he was allegedly transporting it in an autorikshaw on the Sindhanur-Kustagi Road near Sindhanur on Monday. — Staff Correspondent

Man ends life

RAICHUR: Thimmappa (45), son of Pitta Thimmappa, allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide in his filed at Korthkunda village near here on Sunday. He died in Government Civil Hospital. Yapaldinni police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Lokayukta Bill

PANAJI: Goa Government will introduce Lokayukta Bill in the next Assembly session with a view to tackle the growing corruption, said Chief Minister Pratapsing Rane on Monday. Addressing the Legislators' Day function organised by Legislators' Forum, Mr. Rane described corruption as the major malady in society and declared his intention to tackle it. Speaker Francisco Sardinha, who is the ex-officio Chairman of the Legislators' Forum, Manohar Parrikar, Leader of the Opposition, and Herculano Dourado, secretary of Legislators' Forum, were present. — Special Correspondent

Training camp

DAVANGERE: Shyamanur Shivashankarappa, MLA and treasurer of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, on Sunday urged the new zilla and taluk panchayat members to study every scheme threadbare and get familiarised with the rules and regulations. Mr. Shivashankarappa was inaugurating a training camp for the Congress zilla and taluk panchayat members here. He said the representatives should be aware of the schemes introduced by the Government and see to it that the funds allocated are utilised properly. — Staff Correspondent

Modalities discussed

MYSORE: A preliminary meeting to discuss the modalities for the investors' meet was held here on Monday. The two-day meet is to start tentatively from January 20. Speaking to The Hindu , Deputy Commissioner, S. Selvakumar, said the meeting is only preliminary in nature, and that officials and industrialists held discussions on industries and infrastructure. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Selvakumar. It was attended by various officials and industrialists representing trade bodies. — Staff Correspondent

Protest in Mysore

MYSORE: Members of the Association of Concerned and Informed Citizens of Mysore (ACICIM) on Monday staged a protest in front of the K.R. Hospital deploring the deteriorating conditions in K.R. Hospital. They have threatened to launch a satyagraha in front of the hospital if the demands were not met with in 30 days. They said that despite bringing the pathetic conditions prevalent in the hospital to the notice of the authorities and representatives of people, no action has been taken so far. — Staff Correspondent

Teachers stage protest at Provident Fund office

BANGALORE: Teachers who conducted the Mahiti Sindhu computer programme on Monday staged a protest in front of the Provident Fund (PF) office here alleging that private firms who employed them have not deposited in the PF the amounts deducted from their salary. Computer firms implemented Mahiti Sindhu by employing 2,000 teachers in 1,000 government high schools. — Special Correspondent

Team to keep vigil against cow slaughter

BIJAPUR: Rashtriya Hindu Sena President Pramod Muthalik said here on Monday that his party is setting up a 11-member "Suraksha Sena'' at villages and wards to keep vigil against cow slaughter and subversive activities. Addressing presspersons, he said the teams are being formed. His party will organise a "Hindu Rashtra Sankalpa Yatra'' from Belgaum on Thursday. — Staff Correspondent

Honorary doctorate

MYSORE: Writer Lakshmidevi Kadidal Manjappa, wife of the former Chief Minister Kadidal Manjappa, has been chosen for the honorary doctorate by the University of Mysore. The doctorate will be presented to her at the university's annual convocation on January 16, according to Vice-Chancellor J. Shashidhar Prasad. — Special Correspondent
