Agnel ousts Kinshuk

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Agnel Gladwin dismissed the seventh-seeded Kinshuk Sharma 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the first round of the Adidas ITF junior grade `II' tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.

Gladwin reeled off five games in a row in the decider after Kinshuk had saved a breakpoint to hold serve for 2-1. The players had to shift to the adjacent court midway through the third set to make room for the opening ceremony on the centre-court, and that perhaps did not help Kinshuk in tackling a free-stroking opponent.

Yuki Bhambri went down fighting to eighth seed Kaan Yaylali of Turkey in three sets.

The top three seeds, Sanam Singh, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Rupesh Roy cruised into the second round and will all be challenged by the Chinese brigade.

In the girls' section, Gayatri Krishnan bounced back from being down 4-5 in the second set after losing the first, to reel off nine of the next 11 games to pip Karina Ahuja. The latter, who complained of shoulder pain and needed medical attention, saved a breakpoint and converted her ninth gamepoint in holding serve for a 5-4 lead in that second set, before losing her way.

Gayatri will run into the fifth-seeded Sanaa Bhambri. Sanaa was challenged by Yi Miao Zhao, and the Chinese did well to eke out four games from the local girl.
