CHENNAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday supported Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's demand that the Centre take Kachatheevu on Lease in Perpetuity. Terming the demand "just," Member of Parliament and former Union Minister, S. Thirunavukkarasar, suggested that the Centre take up the issue with Sri Lanka. The idea, if implemented, would benefit fisherfolk. Referring to Sunday's incident of a fisherman getting hurt in firing by the Sri Lankan Navy, he urged the Centre to ensure that fishermen from State were protected. Deploring the Centre's decision to reduce offtake of foodgrains for the Below Poverty Line families, too Mr. Thirunavukkarasar said if the United Progressive Alliance partners from Tamil Nadu were sincere about restoring the food subsidy, they should compel the Government to revoke the decision. If the parties criticised the action after agreeing to the decision, it would smack of double standards. He appealed to the Centre to ensure Andhra Pradesh did not go ahead with its plan to build a reservoir across the Palar.
