Youth drowns

SALEM: A 17-year-old youth was drowned in a percolation pond in Thumabathuripatti near here on Sunday. The police said Tamilselvan of Annathanapatti was taking bath in the pond when the incident occurred. - Staff Reporter

Sentenced

SALEM: The Principal District Judge, A.J. Muruganandam, on Monday sentenced a person to life imprisonment on the charge of murdering his sister.

According to the Prosecution, Selvam (38) of Chinnakollapatti, hurled acid on his sister Bhuvaneshwari (17) following a family dispute in February 2005. She sustained severe burns and died in hospital. Her friend, Rameshkumar also sustained burns.

After hearing the arguments, the Judge sentenced Selvam to life imprisonment.

The Judge also awarded seven years jail term for raping the girl, three years for forceful abortion and seven more years for attempting to murder her friend. The Judge said the sentences would run concurrently. - Staff Reporter

Additional building for temple

NAMAKKAL: The Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and the Department of Tourism have decided to construct an additional building in the Aanjaneyar Temple complex to provide accommodation and parking facilities to the devotees.

Since the temple lacks proper lodging facility, it was decided to construct a new building at a cost of Rs. 60 lakhs, Executive Officer P. Mohan said. - Staff Reporter

Lawyers on strike

PERAMBALUR : Lawyers launched an indefinite strike and abstained from attending the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court from Monday, protesting the alleged failure of the judicial officer in maintaining the decorum of the court.

The secretary of the Perambalur Bar Association, M. Sundararajan, said a resolution was adopted at the association's meeting held recently. — Staff Reporter.

Accident toll up

KARUR : The toll in the bus-tractor smash at Meenakshivalasu near here on Sunday went up to three with one person succumbing to injuries at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital on Monday.

M. Velu (34) of Kombanpattu in Dharmapuri district, who was injured in the mishap and was shifted to a private hospital here and then subsequently rushed to the TMCH, succumbed to injuries. Already two persons were killed in the mishap on Sunday. — Staff Reporter.

Mini-bus for orphanage

NAGAPATTINAM : The Annai Sathya Memorial Government Orphanage now functioning in a temporary building at Kadambadi here will be shifted in a few days to the new building now constructed at a cost of Rs.3.20 crores, said J. Radhakrishnan, Collector, here on Sunday.

Addressing a small function after receiving the keys of the mini-bus donated to the orphanage by a telephone company of Netherlands, the Collector said that the mini-bus would be useful for the orphanage children to go to school and come back. He said that the new orphanage building had been provided with all facilities for the children.

Mr. Ton Aan De Stegge and Mr. Phil Knight, directors of the telephone company in Netherlands and Dinakar Pollini of the company handed over the Rs.six lakh mini-bus to the Collector.

Plea for special relief

TIRUCHI : The Bharathiya Kisan Sangam (BKS) has urged the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to come to the rescue of the flood-hit farmers of Tamil Nadu by allocating special relief package.

The Sangam's state general secretary, P. Ayyakannu, said the farmers had been hard hit by the floods. Mr. Ayyakannu said an exclusive budget for agriculture should be presented in the Lok Sabha every year, taking into consideration the special subsidy and other concessions available for the farming community in developed countries such as the United States, England and France.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 115.95 feet today. The inflow was 4173 cusecs and the outflow, 6254 cusecs. — Staff Reporter.

Sankararaman case posted to February 2

PONDICHERRY: The Principal Sessions Judge, Pondicherry, M. Chinnapandi, on Monday posted for January 20 arguments on who will be the public prosecutor in the "Sankararaman murder case." The main case was posted for February 2. When the case came up for hearing defence counsel K.S. Dinakaran sought an adjournment of the case on personal grounds. This was granted by the judge amidst strong objections from the Special Public Prosecutor, Special Investigating Team (SIT), Tamil Nadu, T. Balasundaram. The main accused, the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, was present in the court on Monday while the court dispensed with the appearance of the junior Acharya Sri Vijayendra Saraswathi. — Staff Reporter

Three SIs depose in bus burning case

SALEM: Three sub-inspectors of police, involved in the investigation of the Dharmapuri bus burning incident, deposed before First Additional District Sessions Judge D. Krishna Raja here on Monday. Three girl students of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University were burnt alive when a mob set the university bus on fire at Ilakkampatti in Dharmapuri on Feb 2, 2000, following the conviction of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the Kodaikanal Pleasant Stay Hotel case. Sub-inspector Devarajan, who worked in the Dharmapuri Police Station at that time, told the court that he registered the complaint preferred by the Village Administrative Officer on the incident. The other officials who deposed were Palanimuthu and John Badsha. — Special Correspondent

Mysore-Kumbakonam train timings

THANJAVUR: The Mysore-Kumbakonam Express (Mysore-Thanjavur Express was extended up to Kumbakonam from Monday) no. 6232 will leave Mysore at 15.45 hours and reach Bangalore at 18.45 hours. It will leave Bangalore at 19.10 hours and arrive here at 05.10 hours. It will leave here at 05.15 hours and reach Kumbakonam at 06.30 hours.

Train no. 6231 will leave Kumbakonam at 18.25 hours, arrive here at 19.10 hours and leave at 19.15 hours, reach Bangalore at 05.55 hours and leave Bangalore at 06.30 hours and reach Mysore at 09.30 hours. — Staff Reporter

Four die as car hits stationary bus

KANCHEEPURAM: Four persons died and five were injured when the car in which they were travelling rammed a stationary bus on the Grand Southern Trunk Road at Silavattam near Madurantakam on Monday morning. According to the police, the accident occurred at 6-15 a.m. when the car bound for Chennai from Sabarimala in Kerala, hit the bus which broke down on the carriageway. While, car driver Senthil (25) of Rishivandhyam in Villupuram district, and Mahesh (9) of Perambur in Chennai, died on the spot, Gunasundari (60) and Rajendran (40) of Chennai died at the Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Elephant electrocuted

DINDIGUL: A pregnant elephant was electrocuted when it attempted to cross an electric fence on a patta land in East Ayakudi near Palani town on Sunday. Veterinary doctors conducted a postmortem on Monday and confirmed that the animal died of electric shock. Earlier, the medical team could not conduct postmortem as other elephants did not allow it to go near the carcass. Forest officials led by District Forest Officer struggled for three hours to chase the animals away. A case has been filed against Jayabalan, farm owner, for tapping power illegally for the fence. — Staff Reporter

Fatally knocked down

TIRUNELVELI: M. Ranjit Kumar (13) and P. Ganesan (13), both students of VOC Nagar near Thaazhaiyuththu, who were going in a bicycle, were knocked down by a lorry at Rajavallipuram here on Monday.

In another accident, eight Ayyappa devotees from Villivakkam in Chennai were injured when a lorry dashed against a van at Rama Nagar near Vasudevanallur. — Staff Reporter

Four arrested

Tuticorin: The police on Sunday picked up Mahindrakumar (25), Valliammal (36), Umarani (32) and Muthu (23) from Veeravanji Nagar at Kovilpatti on the charge of indulging in immoral activities. — Staff Reporter

Injured in accident

Tuticorin: The police on Monday arrested lorry driver Vadivel (26), who had knocked down Sataiah (35), a cyclist, at Thermal Nagar near here on Saturday.

Search for four

Tuticorin: The police are searching for four persons who allegedly assaulted a fish vendor at Thattarmadom on Sunday.

There was previous enmity between truck operator Libert and Prabhu (22). So, Libert along with Michel, Rojar and Gildon waylaid Prabhu and assaulted him. — Staff Reporter

Assault case

Tuticorin: The police have registered cases against Subburaj, president of Ennammaniyachi panchayat, and Sankaranarayanan (41) for allegedly assaulting S. Ramanujam (39) on Sunday as the complainant had questioned "irregularities" in the panchayat administration headed by Subburaj.

Ramanujam was hospitalised in Kovilpatti.

A hunt is on to nab the accused. — Staff Reporter
