Cable TV operators preparing for the changing times

    KOCHI: The Cable Operators' Association is working on the lines of floating a company to coordinate the activities of all cable television operators in the State. This is being done to update themselves technologically to cope with the changing times.

    A public limited company called Kerala Cable Communications Limited has been formed and this will soon start functioning.

    "Our goal is to set three head-ends at Kozhikode, Kochi and Kollam. This will streamline the operations of small-scale cable operators," said E. Jayadevan, president of Cable Operators' Association, here recently.

    The head-end is the receiving and first distribution point for cable signals. "By setting up three main head-ends, the cable operators will be able to compete economically with new trends like Direct To Home transmissions," he said.

    In a run up to the State meeting of the Cable Operators' Association to be held at Alappuzha later this month, an exhibition of new trends in cable television networking was organised in the city recently. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dominic Presentation, Minister for Fisheries and Sports, at the Town Hall here on Thursday.

    The exhibition was organised mostly to familiarise small-scale cable operators in the State with the latest trends in the industry and to initiate the upgradation process, said K. Govindan, general secretary of Cable Operators' Association, adding that the response had been overwhelming. Six leading players in the cable industry in the country participated in the exhibition.

    A technical class on cable broadband technology was also held on the inaugural day. The class was on possibilities of providing Internet and other value-added services through the existing cable network itself.

    On Friday, classes on digitisation in cable TV and law and regulation in the cable television industry were held. This was followed by a discussion on `television medium - new trends and future.'

    A technical paper on crises and possibilities in cable television sector of Kerala was presented at the valedictory session on Saturday..
