Lockout at Toyota plant: conciliation effort fails

Special Correspondent

Dispute over the dismissal of three workers

BANGALORE: The management of Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt. Ltd. declined to participate in the conciliation meeting called on Monday by the Deputy Labour Commissioner, V. N. Hittanagi, to discuss and resolve the dispute between the workers' unions and the management over the dismissal of three workers at the company's Bidadi plant near here.

The management of the company had declared a lock-out from Sunday after workers struck work to protest the dismissal.

The next round of conciliation meeting is slated to take place on January 12.

"The management of Toyota Kirloskar Motor refused to come for talks before the Deputy labour Commissioner despite being fully aware that a conciliation meeting was convened on Monday,'' Meenakshi Sundaram, Organisation Secretary, CITU State Committee, told The Hindu.

The representatives of the workers union registered their "strong protest" with the deputy labour commissioner over the management's decision not to attend the talks.

The Bidadi Plant of Toyota Kirloskar rolls out 70 cars a day including the Innova and Corolla models.

The management felt that the atmosphere was charged with emotion and not conducive to participation in the conciliation meeting and express its point of view.
