RAICHUR: De aths on account of road accidents have been on the rise while crimes such as dacoity, robbery, burglary, theft and rape cases are under control in the district, Superintendent of Police R. Hitentra said here on Monday. However, there has been an increase in the number of murder cases, he said. Mr. Hitendra told presspersons that 171 road accidents were reported last year and the toll was 206. Most of the victims were two-wheeler riders. He said 121 road accidents were reported in 2004 and 106 in 2003. The official said over-speeding and reckless driving were main causes behind road accidents. The police have identified eight accident spots along the State Highway between Raichur and Gangavathi. Highway patrolling teams are planned to check the vehicles. The department has been trying to create awareness among the vehicle users about road safety. Mr. Hitendra said 41 murder cases have been reported in one year. Of these, "B" report has been submitted in one case and another case has been shifted to a neighbouring district. Another 22 murder cases are under trial in various courts and 14 cases are under investigation. In two years, 80 murder cases were reported 37 in 2003 and 43 in 2004. He said that six cases of dacoity were reported in 2005, four in 2004 and five in 2003. Only nine cases of robbery and 13 cases of house thefts were reported in 2005 in the district while there were 14 cases of robbery and 15 cases of house thefts in 2004 and eight and 14 cases respectively in 2003 Mr. Hitendra said gambling and matka menace in the district had been brought under control. The department registered 189 cases in 2003, 265 cases in 2004 and 320 cases in 2005 and recovered Rs. 2.38 lakhs, Rs. 4.16 lakhs and Rs. 7.91 lakhss respectively from the accused. In connection with the violation of Motor Vehicles Act, the police registered 3,868 cases in 2003, 11,977 cases in 2004 and 9,648 cases in 2005 and recovered Rs. 6.84 lakhs, Rs. 22.57 lakhs, and Rs. 19.72 lakhs respectively towards fine from the accused. Manufacture and transport of toddy and illicit arrack in the district has been on the rise in three years. In 2005, the police registered 392 cases and seized 2,568 kg of chloral hydrate, 16,297 litres of spurious toddy and of 75,197 arrack sachets along with two lorries and two motorcycles, all estimated at Rs. 12 lakhs. In 2003, 31 cases were reported and 7.5 kg of chloral hydrate and 1,021 litres of toddy were recorded and 28 kg of chloral hydrate and 8,577 liters of toddy were recovered in 2004.
