Rescuing marriages in instant times

Mandira Nayar

Personality developer Ratna S. Khemani

NEW DELHI: It is a bit of an old-fashioned advice that most people have forgotten, feels Ratna S. Khemani, a personality developer from Pune. Moving from moulding young minds "right" to now giving practical advice to newly married couples, Ms. Khemani is out to rescue marriages in a world that is moving towards only instant answers and striving for the picture perfect life.

"I recently found out that one of my favourite students who got married in a lavish way wanted to get a divorce in a month. I was very upset. Since I hate to see a break-up, I tried to help and managed to save it. It was a personal victory for me. I then decided to add relationship and marriage counselling to my centre," says Ms. Khemani who was in Delhi recently to lecture at various institutions. While she has been conducting personality development and grooming seminars for a long time now, she claims that the need for marriage counselling is becoming an important aspect to focus on. She has also included it in the training sessions she takes with multinational companies.

"The stress levels of everyday living and competition to go higher are increasing. Young people want to get bigger and want more and more -- fast. They don't realise that romance comes with responsibility. It is commitment with care, kindness and respect," she says.

With most people unable to cope with ordinary stresses, she asserts that life can't be running around trees. "There is a difference between reel life and real life. Surely life can't be about pub hopping and running around trees. Those things don't lead to a happy life," she adds.

And for those who want to put a little bit of spark back into their relationships, she has plenty of good tips. "Don't reserve the best bit of yourself for other people. Most of us are not always at our best with people at home. Spend some time together. Appreciate each other; compliment each other. I am always treated like a queen when I go abroad. But when my husband gives me a compliment. It means much more," she says with a smile.
