A painting by Sunil Das
NEW DELHI: A retrospective art exhibition by Kolkata's veteran artist Sunil Das is on at Lalit Kala Akademi here on Ferozeshah Road these days. Organised by the Delhi Art Gallery, the series titled "Art Moves" will continue at the Akademi up to January 13. Subsequently it will shift to the Delhi Art Gallery at Hauz Khas Village and will be on view up to the month-end. Beginning his journey into the world of art from the rich and rooted reality of the Kalighat environs in the City of Joy, Sunil Das had been imbibing different artistic flavours over the years. He shot to fame with his representations of horses and bulls. Drawn with flair and vivacious lines, the animals came alive on the canvas. They have been captured in different moods and stances as they are shown speeding, grazing and resting. The retrospective intersperses the experiences of Sunil Das with the thematic choices and artistic preferences that dominate his repertoire. "The retrospective covers different facets of my work. Before this retrospective, exhibitions of my works were held in Mumbai and Kolkata. While in Mumbai the well-known artist Jehangir Sabavala did the inauguration, in Kolkata the go-ahead was given by acclaimed filmmaker Mrinal Sen," says Sunil Das. The inauguration of the retrospective here in the Capital was performed by French Ambassador Dominique Girard over the weekend. A book on the artist titled Art Moves by Sunil Das was released. The book, with colourful illustrations, has been penned by art critic Manasij Majumder. "Sunil Das is the second in our series of monographs on an artist's individual journey towards personal expression and identity in art. He has covered a range of subjects that are also representative of his various concerns and connections with the world, in and outside India. The book is a sincere attempt to present the various facets of Sunil Das. As a gallery, we see exhibiting, curating and writing as collaborative actions to do justice to artists as well as art community," says Delhi Art Gallery director Ashish Anand.
