Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards presented by President Abdul Kalam

HYDERABAD: Abdool Raoof Bundhun, Vice-President, Republic of Mauritius, was among the 11 Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), who received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Monday.

The awards were given away at the concluding session of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas - 2006 here.

Hindu-Muslim unity

Mr. Bundun played an important role in bringing the Hindu and Muslim communities together in the Mauritius.

Sudhir Parikh, president, Federation of Indian Associations, United States; Yesu Persaud, businessman, Guyana; C.K. Menon, businessman, Qatar; Niranjan S. Shah, CEO, Globetrotters Engineering Corporation, Chicago, U.S.; Majid Uddin Kazi, cardiologist and personal physician to King Fahd, Saudi Arabia; Sir Gulam Kaderbhai Noon, founder chairman, Noon Products Limited, London; Eliahu Bezale, agriculture scientist, Israel; Shivnath Rai Bajaj of Diwanchand Group, Thailand; Pratima Kale, International Institute of Rural Reconstruction, Manila, Philippines; and V. Ramadoss, physician to President of Seychelles received awards.

Four others awardees were not present at the function. They are: Rusy M. Shroff, MD, Ruttonjee Estates Continuation Limited, Hong Kong; Jean-Paul Virapoule, French Senator and Mayor of Saint Andre, Reunion Island; Fareed Zakaria, Editor, Newsweek International, U.S.; and Sisupal Rambharose, a highly decorated public figure in Durban, South Africa.
