`Smart card' for emigrant workers

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD : The Centre will shortly introduce `smart cards' for emigrant workers containing all information regarding their employment and insurance.

A round-the-clock helpline at 13 identified missions, commencement of pre-departure orientation programmes for overseas workers with the help of State governments and insurance cover for the entire period of employment are some of the welfare measures being initiated by the Union Government.

This was stated by Protector-General of Emigrants (PGOE) R. K. Singh while addressing delegates at a session on "Indians in Gulf" on the concluding day of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas here on Monday.

Legal aid

Mr. Singh said curbs would be placed on deployment of workers abroad on visit visas as the number of such visas equalled the number of employment visas issued every year.

Priority would be accorded to extend legal aid to overseas workers in cases of labour related problems and full support given to the Overseas Workers' Resource Centre in the Gulf.
