Air pollution Air pollution in Tuticorin causes health hazard to the people and workers. Besides, the port administration has allowed dumping of coal in interior area of the harbour. Coal-dust pervades the whole area. When the wind blows towards land from sea, a large quantity of dust enters the atmosphere. Water sprayed during loading and unloading is not useful in controlling the dust. Discharge from the thermal station is not avoidable but dumping coal in the port area is avoidable. The land has been let out for extra income. Polluting the atmosphere for the sake of money is not justified. The Government should protect the environment.

Maintenance of park
The municipal council has decided to privatise maintenance of Roche Park in Tuticorin. Since municipalities get grants and levy tax to maintain them, privatising maintenance of the park is a grave mistake.
Nagercoil Sir. C. P. R. Park is a typical example of how private parties will spoil a park forgetting environmental role of the park. Today the Nagercoil Municipality cannot cancel the lease order of the contractor. Illegal and unauthorised activities take place in the park.
The reputation of the government and the municipality is damaged but the contractor mints money and the park becomes a den for anti-social activities. Such a fate should not befall on Roche Park.
R. S. Lal Mohan,
Nagercoil.
Cruelty to animals
This refers to the news item `Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to be set up in Tuticorin.'
While taking steps to prevent cruelty to animals, the SPCA should give priority to creating awareness among the people and school children.
By setting up `Kindness clubs' in all schools, it may be possible to inculcate in the minds of the younger generation the need for animal welfare service as part of their civic duties.

Woes of BSNL subscribers
The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, which has reduced landline rental charges in urban and rural areas, has not revised fixed line rental charges for other tariff such as Rs.360.
Likewise, it has announced that surfing the Internet is free from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. when there is a demand to revise free access time from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. No citizen will browse the web in midnight.
S.Nallasivan,
Tirunelveli.

Consumers prefer BSNL cellular service because of its wide coverage. Parthibanur is 17 km away from Paramakudi but there is no coverage.
A tower has been installed at Parthibanur without any operation. If it is operated, cell phone users will have coverage.
V.Rajendran,
Paramakudi.

The BSNL has reduced rental charges for landline phones. This seems to be an eye wash. For, the Electricity Department does not levy rental charges for the meters provided by it. Unless the entire rental is abolished, surrender of landline phones cannot be stopped.
Will the BSNL look into this issue?
Secretary, Consumer Welfare Association,
Ramanathapuram.
Housing quarters
Numerous State Government employees are working in and around Paramakudi. They find it difficult to get rental houses.
While small taluk headquarters like Mudukulathur Tiruvadanai and Kamuthi in Ramanathapuram district have rental quarters of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board, it is pity that the biggest revenue divisional town, Paramakudi, is left with no `government rental quarters.'
Will the authorities concerned look into this matter and take steps to construct rental quarters to house at least 500 employees.
N.Sekaran,
Paramakudi.
Tuticorin.
