Bill against assault of women soon

Special Correspondent

Proposals being perused by Union Home Ministry, says Girija Vyas

HYDERABAD: Girija Vyas, chairperson of the National Commission for Women, on Monday said a comprehensive bill against sexual assault of women, including rape and harassment, is likely to come up before Parliament soon.

Ms. Vyas told presspersons on the sidelines of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) here that proposals made by the commission were included in the bill and they were being perused by the Home Ministry now. The bill attempts to cover inadequacies in the existing law relating to rape and ensure that the perpetrator of the crime does not escape and gets stringent punishment. She said the commission suggested a compensation of Rs. 3 lakhs to Rs. 5 lakhs and rehabilitation of the victims. A committee formed with district Collector and Superintendent of Police would decide upon the compensation.

The NCW chairperson said the commission received about 1,000 complaints by women against NRIs on marriage-related issues, harassment and assault. These have come from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. The commission supported the idea of setting up a gender cell in the Overseas Indian Affairs Ministry that could look into such complaints.

Ranjana Kumari, president of Women Power Connect, said there were several issues of concern, including failed and fraudulent marriages between NRIs and Indian brides, problems of emigrant women labourers and child adoption.
