`Indians starved of Hindi movies'

Ravi Reddy

HYDERABAD: "We are starved of Hindi movies," is how an expatriate Indian in the Gulf reacted to the strict censorship laws in those countries.

Speaking at a session on `Indians in Gulf' at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas on Monday, Abdul Qader Memon from Saudi Arabia went on to add how Mallika Sherawat, heroine of recent Hindi blockbuster, `Murder' was not at all shown on the screens because of the strict censorship.

Diehard movie buffs in Gulf should get an opportunity to watch Hindi and other movies like their relatives in India, Mr. Memon pleaded with the Indian Government.

There was all-round applause at the suggestion as other delegates also expressed disappointment at being denied an opportunity to watch full-length Bollywood movies.

Barring this lighter moment, the NRIs expressed displeasure at the absence of Minister of State for Overseas Indian Affairs Oscar Fernandes at the session.

The unanimous opinion expressed by the delegates was that mere discussion and deliberations would not redress the sufferings of lakhs of expatriates in the Gulf.

They said the Centre should be receptive to their feelings and make determined efforts to redress their grievances.
