TAMBARAM: He is a first generation school-goer from a family of traditional sheep grazers near Tirukazhukundram, a town off Chengalpattu near Chennai, and he has won the top prize in the State-level science exhibition for schools at Erode recently. S. Sasi Kumar, a Std. XI vocational stream (electrical motor and rewinding) student from a local government school received the first prize in `Landmarks in science' category for senior students for his project, `Knowing water qualities through electricity and its applications.' First displayed at the district-level exhibition in Tambaram in December, the project was selected for the State-level event, which ended on Saturday. Nearly 200 projects from 62 schools made it to the exhibition. Sasi Kumar's project helps in identifying potable water, recycling of polluted water, understanding water's physical and chemical laws and the concept of using water for resistance (fan regulator) and inductance (tubelight choke).
Guidance
The youngster had been guided by a teacher, K. Balasundaram. The boy's project model comprises samples of distilled water, mineral water, rainwater, pond water and seawater. The glowing of a bulb is an indication of the density of mineral content more the minerals, brighter the glow.
