Lucknow: Two newly-elected village heads were killed by their political rivals following the just-concluded panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh on Monday, the police here said. Mohd Hanif, pradhan of Nara village in Kaushambi district, was seriously injured when three persons attacked him with country-made bombs while he had gone to inspect the construction of a link road near the village, they said. He was rushed to the local primary health centre and later to Allahabad where he succumbed to injuries, the police said. Terming the killing as the outcome of election rivalry, Circle Officer Om Prakash Pandey said Hanif had won the recent elections by a margin of six votes. Two family members of a former lady pradhan were also killed in the same village recently over panchayat polls. In another incident, head of Uparidaha village in Sultanpur district Bhabhuti Mallah was shot dead by unidentified assailants while he was returning home late on Sunday night, they said adding election rivalry was stated to be the reason behind the killing. No arrests had yet been made in this connection, they added. PTI
