Ahluwalia praises health care services

Says hospital is well maintained

Pondicherry: Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia is all praise of the Government General Hospital here.

Dr. Ahluwalia told newsmen here on Monday that the hospital was maintained well and had good infrastructure. He was happy about the health services available in the hospital.

Health Minister E. Valsaraj explained to Mr. Ahluwalia various facilities available in health delivery systems and also care given to patients during the latter's visit to various wings of the hospital. The Director of Health and Family Welfare Services Dilip Kumar Baliga, the Medical Superintendent V Govindaraj accompanied them. The Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, also accompanied Mr. Ahluwalia.

He then visited the tsunami hit Moorthy Pudukuppam in Bahoor Assembly constituency and saw for himself ongoing construction of houses by the SOS Children's Villages of India. The Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner, B.V. Selvaraj, and the District Collector, G. Ragesh Chandra, explained to Mr. Ahluwalia the features of housing project. Around 225 houses were being constructed with each house costing around Rs. 3 lakh.

Mr. Selvaraj apprised him of the number of Memorandums of Understanding signed with around 12 non-governmental organisations for housing facilities. Around 8,300 houses would be needed and through MoUs 5,000 houses would be constructed.

He drove to the fishing harbour in Thengaithittu backwater and officials of the Department of Fisheries, the Chief Secretary, C.S. Khairwal, and the Health Minister, E. Valsaraj, explained to him the fishing activities. Mr. Khairwal said there was a plan to offer training to around 5000 local fishermen on handling the steel trawlers. The Administration had drawn up plans to procure around ten such trawlers from Thailand or Malaysia.
